A long history of fear and ignorance has lead to a continual cycle of violence that too often results in the death of those whose ancestors fought and died to ensure they would live in a world where "all men are created equal" was true.
To say that racism does not exist and that fear does not predicate violent acts which are later deemed "self-defense" or "self preservation" is making the choice to live in a bubble.
We can’t let fear allow us to remain in a bubble, we must understand the outrage instead of taking offense. Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power and is the only thing that may someday lead to a world that resembles the one that so many have fought and died for.
You are human. You are allowed to feel, to mourn, to be sad, outraged-unapologetically. Let’s come together in compassion, love and put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. One thing we can see from history is that Change happens because people keep fighting for it.
